Executive Chef: Asier Santamaria

Located in a cluster of small villages in the center of La Rioja , this popular restaurant offers both a contemporary feast as well as a few experimental regional dishes worth a second visit. Enjoy an excellent meal for two, including their outstanding house wine, for under 50 Euros.

Reservations are required during the summer season. Closed Sunday nights, Mondays, the last two weeks of June and December.

Nuevo Regional Basque Cuisine.

This destination restaurant in the Rioja Alta region offers an outstanding selection of nuevo regional Basque Riojan dishes. Excellent selection of Rioja wines. Recommended by Bodegas Miguel Merio (http://www.miguelmerino.com/)

Traditional Regional Basque Cuisine.

This popular family owned and operated neighborhood restaurant offers a hearty meal in the traditional Basque style. Two can dine on a mixed salad, alubias roja (red beans stew), chuletón de buey (a very large veal chop) an excellent house rioja and homemade desert, all for under 50 Euros

This small and cozy eponymous restaurant of noted San Sebastian chef, trained by Arzak and Arguinaño, offers very attractively priced dishes that are sure to please. Selected as a Bib Gourmand for value in the 2006 red Michelin guide. It's another favorite of area winemakers. Closed Sunday night and Monday.

Chef Juan Nales (trained under Luis Irízar and Pedro Subijana) produces a creative market driven menu with specialties such as mushroom risotto with Parmesan foam, loan of roast venison with hazelnut croquette and fresh cheese ice cream and red wine sorbet.

Esther & Tomas have been serving outstanding traditional Riojan cuisine for 17 years, offering fresh vegetables grown along the Ribera del Ebro, the best grilled Galician beef and fish fresh from the waters of the Cantabrian sea.

Chef: Patxi Amelibia

Opened in 2005, Amelibia has gained a reputation and following among locals as well as visitors to the Rioja. A favorite of chef Héctor Oribe.

Reservations required. Open for lunch from 1:00 to 3:30, dinner from 9:00 to 10:30. Closed Tuesdays and for dinner on Saturday and Sunday.

El Portal del Echaurren, C/ Padre José García, 19, Ezcaray (Rioja Alta)
(Avant-garde) Traditional Regional Cuisine.

Sitting in the small mountain village of Ezcaray, this is a prime destination for true gourmets. Opened in 2001, the Portal of Echaurren became the first restaurant in La Rioja to receive a Michelin star. There is also a 21-room hotel should you want to spend the night, and a second restaurant, Echaurren, where Marisa Sanchez offers a more traditional cuisine than her son Francis.

Located just outside of the old city, this stylish restaurant offers a reasonably priced gastronomic menu.

Reservations required. Opens for lunch at 1:30, dinner at 9:00. Closed Sunday and Monday night.

La Venta de Moncalvillo, Ctra. Medrano, 6, Daroca de Rioja (Rioja Alta)

Chef: Ignacio Echapresto

Located in the small village of Daroca. 12 minutes south of Logroño, the restaurant opened in 1997 as a modest casa de comidas, but has since evolved into a major dining destination, becoming one of the regions premier restaurants. The main dining room seats 40. There is a private dining room for up to 10 and a table for 14 in the bodega. There is a separate salon to sit back, relax and enjoy an after dinner drink and cigar.

Reservations required. Opens for lunch at 1:30, dinner at 9:00. Closed at Christmas, two weeks in August and Sunday, except for public holidays.

Restaurante Asador La Vieja Bodega, Avenída de La Rioja, 17, Casalarreina (Rioja Alta)

Once a wine cellar, this is one of the most famous restaurants in the Rioja Alta. Opened in 1994 by Ángel Pérez Aguila, and rebuilt after a fire in 2001, it offers a 50-wine menu and specialties from La Rioja, Castile-León and the Basque Country. Dishes prepared with great care, including roast lamb, fish like hake and cod and meat like pig's trotters and suckling pig confit. It's handicap assessable and has a menu in Braille.

Reservations recommended, especially on weekends.
